Asisat Oshoala: Super Falcons star makes World Cup history with super goal against Australia
Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala continues her march towards becoming Africa’s greatest-ever female player after entering the FIFA Women’s World Cup history books with a goal against Australia to continue her perfect run in the competition
Oshoala makes crucial cameo against Australia
An injury prevented Oshoala from making the starting 11 for the Super Falcons against Australia, but she made good use of her time on the pitch to score Nigeria’s third goal of the game to give them some breathing space.
Only eight minutes after coming on for Uchenna Kanu, Oshoala pounced on a defensive mix-up from the Matilda’s to put Nigeria 3-1 up, with what proved to be the winning goal.
In doing so, Asisat scored the third World Cup goal of her career, putting her firmly in the history books.
Oshoala makes World Cup history with Australia goal
The goal after 72 minutes against Australia meant that the Barcelona Femeni star had now scored in all three World Cup appearances that she has made, adding to her goals in 2015 and 2019.
Oshoala’s strike against Australia added to her goals against Sweden in 2015 and South Korea in 2019, making her the first African woman to score at three different World Cup tournaments.
Oshoala continues to stake her claim as Africa’s greatest female player with yet another record, and the two-time UEFA Women’s Champions League winner will be hoping that she can take her performance against Australia into the latter stages of the competition to make more history with the Super Falcons.
