New York Rep. Nadler cites need for generational change as he bows out after long tenure

Nadler to Retire After 34 Years in Congress

Washington, D.C.  Representative Jerry Nadler, a veteran Democrat from New York and a long-standing critic of President Donald Trump, announced he will not seek re-election in 2026, ending a distinguished 34-year tenure in Congress. He attributed his decision to a pressing need for “generational change” within the Democratic Party.

At 78 years old, and the 10th most senior member of the U.S. House, Nadler has played pivotal roles in American politics most notably as Chair of the House Judiciary Committee and a key player in both Trump impeachment proceedings.

In an interview with The New York Times, Nadler said watching President Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race underscored how critical it is for younger leaders to step up.

“Watching the Biden thing really said something about the necessity for generational change in the party,” he explained, adding that some senior leaders should make room for the next generation.PoliticoReuters

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries praised Nadler as a “relentless fighter for justice, civil rights and liberties,” and a mentor to many in Congress. Senator Elizabeth Warren also lauded him as “a man of principle,” recognizing his enduring commitment to progressive causes. The Washington Post

Nadler’s retirement triggers a competitive race for his Upper West Side seat. Potential candidates eyeing his position include Assemblyman Micah Lasher, Councilman Erik Bottcher, and former Comptroller Scott Stringer. Nadler is believed to support Lasher, his former aide.
