Mike Johnson Says Charlie Kirk Killing “Could Be a Turning Point” for U.S., Urges Leaders to Tone Down Rhetoric

Body

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has said that the recent killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk may represent “a turning point” for the country. Speaking on Face the Nation, Johnson urged public officials and media personalities to turn down the rhetoric and stop framing political disagreements as existential threats.

Johnson warned against the use of extreme labels—such as calling people “Nazis” or “fascists”—noting that such language, increasingly common in political discourse, can embolden those predisposed to violence. He expressed hope that leaders from both sides of the aisle are stepping up to foster calm and responsible speech.

He also described the emotional aftermath within Congress, saying lawmakers feel a mix of anger, sadness, and fear as the country reacts to the targeted attack. The shooter, Tyler James Robinson, was arrested and charged with aggravated murder and other offenses.

Johnson recalled a moment of silence held in Kirk’s honor, and shared that he believes Kirk would have wanted people to move forward “boldly … in love,” rather than descending into despair.

Otti Explains Delay in Ukwa Seaport Project

Umuahia (Abia State) Governor Alex Otti has explained why the much-awaited Ukwa seaport project has not commenced. Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Ezumezu Ndoki Patriotic Association in Ukwa East, he stressed that his administration will not begin the project until full funding is assured, ensuring it will be completed once initiated

He revealed that a Chinese team submitted feasibility reports indicating approximately 19.5 km of dredging is required to reach the high sea — significantly more than earlier estimates suggested

Otti emphasized that commencing such an extensive project without financial confidence risks abandoning the project midway, a scenario his administration intends to avoid

He also reassured the public that other infrastructural projects, such as local road construction, are progressing steadily despite the seaport delay. These include the Akirikaobu and Obohia roads, which are now active following earlier setbacks

Edo APC Stood by 2023 LGA Candidates Amid Bias Claims

Edo (Benin City) The Edo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarret Tenebe, has revealed that the party allowed its local government area (LGA) candidates to participate in the 2023 LGA election despite what he described as clear attempts by the then-ruling government to compromise the process. He emphasized that the decision was deliberate, aiming to build groundwork ahead of the 2024 governorship election.

Speaking at the party secretariat on August 26, 2025, Tenebe commended the candidates for their “determination, confidence, and belief in the party,” especially given the APC’s position as opposition at the time. He credited their participation with mobilizing support for Senator Monday Okpebholo, who later won the 2024 governorship race.

Tenebe stated:

“Consultations began with party leaders and we all later agreed that the party should contest that election, which was keenly contested… You campaigned vigorously for Senator Monday Okpebholo to win the governorship election in the state.”

On behalf of the former candidates, Enahoro Aikpokpo expressed that they contested under difficult conditions to keep the party alive amid intimidation and setbacks. They appealed to the party to prioritize them in upcoming LGA elections, requesting the “right of first refusal.”

Oba Oloyede Pleads Guilty in $4.2M COVID-19 Relief Fraud Case

Oba Joseph Oloyede, known as the Apetu of Ipetumodu, formally pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court on April 21, 2025, admitting involvement in a $4.2 million fraud involving COVID-19 relief funds under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) schemes. He acknowledged the pandemic’s unprecedented strain—particularly his health fears—but clarified that “COVID-19 is not an excuse, but it is a factor.” Peoples Gazette NigeriaWikipedia

Community Reacts to King’s Absence

The prolonged absence of the monarch since early 2024 left his community in Ipetumodu unsettled, particularly after he missed several key cultural festivals. His removal from traditional duties sparked conversations about leadership gaps and pending succession issues back home.
