Sierra Leone’s President Sounds Alarm on Drug Abuse, Declares National Crisis

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has taken a firm stand against drug abuse, labeling it a “national emergency” during his recent address to the nation. He specifically highlighted the growing use of a synthetic drug called Kush among young people, expressing deep concern over its impact on society.

In response to this pressing issue, President Bio announced plans to tackle the problem head-on. A dedicated task force comprising government agencies and non-governmental organizations will be established to address various aspects of drug abuse, including prevention, treatment, social services support, law enforcement, and community engagement.

Moreover, President Bio emphasized the government’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks operating within the country. This commitment was underscored by a recent police seizure of two containers filled with Kush in the capital city of Freetown. Seven suspects were apprehended in connection with the seizure, according to Police Commissioner Joseph Lahai.

President Bio’s decisive actions reflect a concerted effort to safeguard the well-being of Sierra Leonean citizens and combat the harmful effects of drug abuse on society.
